Primavera-IA Challange

Spring-to me the idea of Spring is newness, budding flowers, and color! Color every where after months of neutrals. And as everyone who knows me I love color.
This began as a free flow painting, but when I was not getting a feel for it I turned it to the side and found a budding flower. It's an 8x8 acrylic on canvas and will be going up for sale on my website and will have prints offered.
I hope you enjoy it and look for other IA entries for Primavera.

Feedback needed

I just finished this painting and would really love some opinions and feedback on it. 1-is it too simple? Too bright, too dark? Did I mess it up adding the interference paint in the trees? (I wanted to give it a feel of a breeze blowing and just a hint of magic.) Do I need to add something? As everyone knows I hate too much detail and love color. I also love sparklies and It's killing me not to add small rhinestones as stars. Should I try to sell it as is or should I add the stones? I feel like I'm not voicing my own vision not to add the stones, but I would really love to sell this as a print too. It's called Early Autumn Night. Help!

A Summer Abstract-Comments Welcomed

I finished this new abstract today and would like some feedback. Are the colors strong enough? Should I add anything? Should I not have put in the words. I did refrain from adding bling to it (and you have no idea how hard that was to me). I wanted to keep it light and airy and warm, like a summer day. I doing a lot of Summer paintings. I'll more as they get done. The pic sucks I know because of the overcast day. I'll do a better pic as soon as sun decides to shine.

Ok, the top image is unaltered and was taken outside in the sunlight. The bottom is enhanced and was taken inside. Which do you think is the best? Please let me know.

Summer Afternoon

I made this altered bottle for an artist friend I was visiting as a giftie. I wanted it to have the feel of a summer afternoon pond under trees with sunlight shining through the leaves.

I had to coat the bottle with matte gel medium first to get the textured look I wanted. I also used interference paint to give a shiny look. It also helped that it was a beautiful sunny day when I took these pics.

$40 Million Dream

The other day at work my co-workers and I were discussing a sports star two year forty million dollar contract and what we would do with that kind of money. Of course there were the normal dreams of big houses and travel and kids' college funds. One lady wanted to start a foundation for underprivileged kids. But it got me to really thinking-what WOULD I do with that kind of money?
Besides making sure my nieces and nephews were taken care of and college bound/paid for, my bills paid off, and make sure I never have to work a "real" job again, this is what I want...
I am downtown Johnson City alot. While roaming the streets I run into the homeless. Contrary to what people believe these homeless aren't mental, druggies, or criminals. There is a large veteran's hospital here in Johnson City. For the most part these homeless are veterans coming here to the hospital for help and just have no where to stay. The local shelters just do not have enough room or resources to deal with them all. With $40 million I could buy up some houses around the hospital and turned them into places for them to stay, staffed with caring people. And set up a foundation to keep it going. It is only what they deserve.
Next, set up a annual donation to the arts for kids programs in this area. Children need to be exposed to the visual arts, music, writing. Studies show that they do better in other areas when they are.
Another thing I would wish to do is buy up one of the old abandon warehouses downtown and convert it into studios for artists who have no place or little space to work. Believe you me, this is an issue for me as my house is quite small and I would love to do larger works. The is an excellent college near by-East Tennessee State University-with a great arts program, but I bet most of the arts students don't have much space to create outside the classroom. Just the thought of a large warehouse space filled with artists of all ages and styles exchanging ideas, critiques, info, and coffee makes me shiver. With delight. And, of course, there will have to be a gallery space to show all that work.
If there was anything left over I would want my own gallery to show my and others' work.

Ok, done dreaming. Time to start the laundry. And a new painting.

Luvs and happy creating!

Finds

Well, decided to take a break from jewelry making and go through some old work stacked up in Cory's room and found these old oil paintings of mine from college (yes, I did go. Didn't learn much.) We were suppose to do two paintings inspired by our favorite artists. This was back in the mid-nineties. Or maybe early nineties. Can't really remember.

Anyway, these were inspired by Georgia O'Keefe (duh, best female artist ever) and Pierre Bonnard (I love his paintings).

Just wanted to share them with you.

A New Painting

Just something I have been working on. It's a 30x40 mixed media abstract. I began it with a poem by my nephew written on the canvas and a letter I found, as well with tissue paper, paint, pen, gesso pen, stamps, sticker, and my favorite, interferance paint.

New Abstracts

These are destined for the 4x4 show coming up in March. It's a charity event, but it also is good for publicity.

One World One Heart

Welcome to my posting for One World, One Heart. This is the last year for this event and I wish I had known of it sooner. So, let me introduce myself. My name is Kelly Jeanette though just call me Kelly or Kel. I am a mixed media artist and writer living in the beautiful mountains of East Tennessee, USA. There area is best known for bluegrass music, the International Storytelling Festival, and Bristol Motor Speedway.

Though I live here now I still consider myself a South Carolinian. I was raised on the coast and in the Piedmont area. I love the sea and try to visit Myrtle Beach, SC at least twice a year to fed the love.

Anyone who is familiar with my artwork knows two things about it-I like intense color and I like bling. I can't finish anything without putting something glittery and/or metallic on it. My mom always said I must of been a gypsy in a past life. I don't know if she was referring to the bling or the tendency to wander. I do love to travel.

Anything else you want to know this blog can tell you. It's all about me.

So, for the giftie. This is it, a mixed media necklace I crafted using handmade paper beads made from a magazine page and painted with iridescent paint, ribbon, yarn, wooden beads, shell pieces, wire, agate stone, and Tibetan bells.

It's not a perfect creation. That's just not me. To be commerically perfect is boring!

(sorry about the image. Photographing a necklace was harder than I thought. And the iridescent paint kept blurring.) If you don't want to be included in the give-away just say so in the comments.

The give away is open to all bloggers. I'll be picking the winner be random andinforming them by e-mail. Please leave me your e-mail if it is not on your blog so that I can let the winners know.

Wow Jewelry!

Usually I don't pick this magazine up, but I was in Barnes and Noble today trying to decide on a new magazine to buy when this cover caught my eye. I don't know why I have not noticed it before. Out of curosity I picked it up and started to flip through it.
Wow! I am floored by the mixed media jewelry in it. Beautiful work. I'm itching to come up on some designs like the ones in it's pages. This is the Autumn 2010 issues so I'm glad I found it before it was removed.
So busy Saturday with family stuff and movies on Sunday, but I WILL find time to do some jewelry.

Inspiration Avenue Weekly Challenge-Metamorphosis

What am I becoming? A rose in bloom? A bird in flight? A star shining bright? A fire burning my soul, my spirit, my life.

This is what I came up with for Inspiration Avenue's challenge this week for Metamorphosis.

I have been seeing changes in my own life lately and have been wondering where they are taking me.

I chose four of favorite themes for this-fire, roses, birds, and stars.

Inspiration Avenue-Something Found

This week the theme at Inspiration Avenue was to use something found. I have been at my "day job" for way too many hours this week so did not have a chance to look for something this week so I used something I found a long time ago. A rattlesnake tail. I made a Native American inspired necklace out of it. I really wanted a real choker but my neck is too small and the choker would not look good. I know because I tried. I love Southwest and Native American jewelry.

I did use carnelian beads and bone beads I bought to make the necklace. It usually hangs in my bathroom because I don't wear it much. The guys at work have tried to talk me out of it. The cats don't like me to wear it either. They hiss and carry on when they hear it rattle. Must be a species memory thing because they have never seen a rattlesnake.

In Native American lore the rattlesnake is considered a messenger from the spirits as well as a protector and teacher. Maybe the rattlesnake is one of my totems and I was meant to find this tail.

Inspiration Avenue Theme-Words

This is my post for this weeks theme-Words-at Inspiration Avenue. I chose the words imagine because I have been imagining alot lately. The bird represents my spirit taking flight into a new future. I hope.

Repurposing An Old Painting

So, has anyone had a failed painting, but didn't want to ditch a perfectly good canvas (especially a large expensive canvas)? I did and decided to redo this one, so I started out riping some of the elements off of it, then gessoed over it. After it dried there were more elements I could ripe off but that added an interesting look to the canvas. Next will come my trusty Sharpie marker for the writing elements. Then a wash of yellow orange (why? Because that is what I like). That is as far as I got so far. Tune in later.
